About
Alexander Sherrod is a Savannah based painter and sculptor. Over the last seven years he has produced hundreds of large-scale styrofoam sculptures in New Orleans at Kern Studios for the Mardi Gras Krewes of Rex, Hermes, Muses, Endymion, Bacchus, Orpheus, and Zulu. He has also created foam sculptures for Universal Studios Orlando, NFL, Chic-fil-a, Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade, and others. His work there has been featured in various publications from the Times -Picayune and New Orleans Advocate to Garden & Gun magazine. He has also been showcased on multiple television shows on the Travel Channel, History Channel, and PBS, as well as local network affiliates WWLTV and WGNO.
In 2009, he discovered what is now a deep love and passion for painting after being shown a few masterful drips and drops by fellow artist, friend, and mentor, Charles F. Bendzans. His passion was ignited from the work of painters which continue to inspire him today: Robert Rauschenberg, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Salvador Dali, Cy Twombly, Albrecht Durer, Giorgio de Chirico, Larry Rivers, Willem de Kooning, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro, Franz Kilne, Henri Matisse, Paul Klee, Hans Bellmer, Mark Rothko, Ivan Albright, Vincent Van Gogh, Piet Mondrian, Egon Schiele, and Gustav Klimt.
He uses acrylic medium, paper, water, found objects, photographs, and photo manipulated prints on canvas to capture subconscious motivations in the abstract. His work reflects the bright colors, shapes, and scale within his life as an artist imbedded in the carnival culture of New Orleans.
